Burry port
Lovely sea-side town, made famous by Amelia Earhart’s landing of her seaplane, after being the first woman to cross the Atlantic in 1928. Burry Port is 4 miles from Llanelli.
Accessible stunning Coastal environment.
Burry Port Harbour.
This is about 10 mins walk from St Mary’s Court and is a great area to just stroll around. The Harbour has berths for 450 boats, and is situated within 14 miles of landscaped parkland, part of the Millennium Coast Park. The Boats moored are nowadays mostly for leisure, but, you can still see fishing boats! There are also lots of benches to sit on, just for reflection.
Burry Port Beach.
This is a new innovation and is proving popular with surfers, riding 4-6 foot waves and sea canoeists. It took 3 years to convert an area of open mud flats into golden sand. Wonderful to watch in the summer months.
Millennium Coast Path.
Great for walking near or far. This park includes 22 km pedestrian walkway and cycleway, along the Coast of Carmarthenshire, connecting Bynea, Machynys, Llanelli, Burry port and Pembrey County Park. The cycle ways form a section of both the Celtic Trail cycle route (part of NCR 47) and the National Cycle Route.
The Millennium Coastal Park has been open for 10 years and now the Loughor estuary offers a range of tourist attractions, leisure facilities and offering a great variety of wildlife habitats, including lake ( with swans, grebes and tufted ducks as well as more common birds), salt marsh, fen, woodland, steam and semi-natural grassland. From the cycle path at Machynys, there are also great views of mud flats, with rare and internationally important birds, such as dunlin, sanderling, shelduck, oystercatcher and curlew.
The Discovery Centre
This hub for information about the various aspects of the area, is situated overlooking Llanelli beach and offers stunning view over the Loughor estuary and the Gower area.
Golf Courses. There are 2 very impressive and significant courses, very close to Burry Port.
Just the other side of Llanelli, travelling east, off the Millennium Coast Park is Machynys Clwb Golff. This was opened in 2005 and is a Nicklaus designed 7121 yard modern links golf course, which has already hosted 8 championships, including 2 R & A Open championships and 4 Ryder Cup Wales LET Championships of Europe. It is the youngest course to be awarded R & A championship status and can be enjoyed by golfers at many levels, using up to 5 tees per hole.
This more than a golf club, it also hosts the Machynys Brasserie, the Monks Premier Spa and the Driving Range and Academy. They would be very happy to discuss membership with you.
Just the other side of Burry Port, travelling west, is Ashburnham Golf Club. This is, by contrast, a very wonderfully established and traditional links course. It is one of the finest Championship Links course in Britain and is currently ranked 6th best course in Wales, hosting recently a number of professionals and amateur Championships including two British PGA Championships and the 1976 Martini International Tournament. The most recent success was the 2014 Seniors Open Championship. Members and Visitors can appreciate the true links experience provided by this historic venue.
